Houston Run Club Recap: Running Through the Decades with Cookie Crew

Houston Run Club Recap: Running Through the Decades with Cookie Crew

On March 21st, the Safely team partnered with Cookie Crew Run Club in Houston for a community run that brought women together to celebrate movement, connection, and the generations of women who have shaped the running community.

Hosted at Active Passion, the morning welcomed runners of all paces for a run designed to be inclusive, encouraging, and rooted in community. From decade-inspired outfits to first time runners showing up alongside seasoned athletes, the energy was something special.

Because running has always been about more than just miles.

Celebrating Women Through the Decades

This run was centered around celebrating women through the decades and the supporters who run alongside them. Runners showed up representing different eras, bringing personality, creativity, and a sense of fun to the morning.

It created an environment where everyone felt welcome, whether they were there to run, walk, or simply be part of the experience.

There was no pressure on pace or performance. Just a shared moment and a reminder of how powerful community can be.

Bringing Safety Into the Run

As part of the event, the Safely team led a hands on safety demo to help runners feel more confident and prepared on their runs.

We introduced runners to our practice spray, a 100% water based formula designed to help people safely learn how to use pepper spray before ever needing it.

And of course, Pinky made an appearance.

Pinky, our life sized pink skeleton, gave runners the opportunity to step up, practice their aim, and get comfortable using their tools in a safe and approachable way. It turned something that can feel intimidating into something interactive and empowering.

Because confidence does not come from carrying a tool. It comes from knowing how to use it.

Why Practicing Matters for Runners

So many runners share that they carry a safety tool but have never actually practiced using it.

Taking the time to practice helps remove hesitation and builds confidence so that if you ever need it, you know exactly what to do.

We always encourage runners to continue practicing beyond events. At home, this can be as simple as using practice spray alongside our mini Pinky target poster to build muscle memory in a low pressure environment.

Preparation should feel accessible, not overwhelming.

Runner Safety Tips for Women

For those looking for runner safety tips or ways to feel more confident running alone, here are a few simple habits that can make a difference.

  • Stay aware of your surroundings and limit distractions while running.
  • Choose routes that feel comfortable and well lit, especially for early morning runs.
  • Let someone know your plan before heading out.
  • Run with others when possible or share your location.
  • Carry a personal safety tool so you feel prepared if something unexpected happens.

These are small steps, but they can make a big difference in how you feel on your runs.

A Community That Shows Up

What stood out most during this event was the energy and support from the group.

From the moment runners arrived to the final stretch of the run, there was a sense of encouragement, connection, and shared purpose. Events like this remind us that safety is not something we navigate alone. It is something we build together through community and awareness.

Safely is proud to partner with run clubs like Cookie Crew that are creating inclusive spaces where women feel supported and empowered.

Looking Ahead

We will continue partnering with run clubs and communities across the country to bring hands on safety education to runners everywhere. To see where Safely will be in the future you can always check out our Events page
