UT Austin Students Learn Self Defense and Safety Tips at SafeHorns Galentine’s Event

The Safely team partnered with SafeHorns to host a Galentine’s event focused on confidence, community, and safety for women at the University of Texas.

Hosted at SafeHorns Place in West Campus, the evening brought together Lady Longhorns for a fun and empowering night filled with practical safety education, hands-on demonstrations, and meaningful conversations about campus safety.

For the Safely team, events like this are especially meaningful. Safely was founded by four women who met right here on the Forty Acres, and our mission has always been rooted in helping women feel more confident and prepared in their everyday lives.

Safety Conversations on the Forty Acres

Safety has become an increasingly important conversation for students at the University of Texas. With thousands of students living in West Campus and walking across campus at all hours of the day, knowing how to stay aware and prepared can make a meaningful difference.

Events like this help create space for students to ask questions, learn practical safety skills, and support one another while building a stronger and safer Longhorn community.

Teaching Pepper Spray Safety

During the event, Safely led a pepper spray safety demonstration, showing students how these tools work and how to use them responsibly.

Instead of just talking about safety, students were able to practice with Safely’s practice spray, which contains a 100% water formula that allows people to learn how to aim and use the tool safely.

Many students shared that they carry pepper spray but have never practiced using it before. Taking the time to learn how these tools work can make a big difference in building confidence.

Students also had the opportunity to see the Safely Sidekick, our multi-functional self defense tool featuring a bright flashlight, pepper spray, personal safety alarm, and interchangeable attachments designed to help women stay prepared in everyday situations.

A Night Focused on Empowerment

The evening included a number of activities designed to help students feel confident and supported.

Attendees participated in a self defense workshop, learned about safety tools, enjoyed zero proof mocktails, and connected with other women in the UT community.

It was inspiring to see so many students show up ready to learn, ask questions, and support one another.

Supporting Safer Campuses

SafeHorns continues to play an important role in helping improve safety at the University of Texas. Their work focuses on advocating for safer campus environments and creating spaces where students can access resources and education.

We are grateful for organizations like SafeHorns that are committed to protecting and supporting students.

Safety Tips for Students Living in West Campus

West Campus is one of the most active areas around the University of Texas. With thousands of students living nearby, walking to class, meeting friends, and studying late into the evening, it is important to stay aware and prepared.

While college should be an exciting time filled with new experiences, having a few safety habits can help students feel more confident navigating campus and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Here are a few simple safety tips students can keep in mind:

• Stay aware of your surroundings when walking, especially at night
• Walk with friends when possible or let someone know where you are going
• Avoid distractions like texting while walking alone
• Use well lit routes and campus safety services when available
• Carry a personal safety tool like pepper spray so you are prepared if you ever need it

At Safely, we believe knowledge and preparation help people feel more confident in their everyday routines. Learning about safety tools and practicing how to use them can make a big difference.

Creating a Safer Tomorrow

One of the most powerful parts of the night was seeing students leave feeling more informed and confident.

At Safely, we believe safety education should be approachable, supportive, and community driven. Events like this help start important conversations and give women the tools and knowledge they need to feel more prepared.

We are grateful to SafeHorns for hosting such a meaningful event and for continuing to advocate for safer campuses.

Together, we are creating a safer tomorrow.
