What We Learned at Buford’s 5K: Running as a Community, Showing Up for Each Other

On March 14th, the Safely team partnered with the Austin running community for Buford’s 5K Fundraiser, a meaningful event created to support the victims and families impacted by the Buford’s tragedy.

Held at Juliet Italian Kitchen in Austin, the morning brought together runners, local organizations, and community members for a 3 mile run, brand activations, and opportunities to give back. Events like this are a reminder of the strength of the running community and the importance of showing up for one another, both on and off the course.

Running Together for Something Bigger

The event welcomed runners of all levels who came together with a shared purpose of supporting those impacted and being part of a community that cares. Throughout the morning, participants connected with local brands, spent time with fellow runners, and contributed directly to the victims support fund.

It was not just about running. It was about being present, supporting others, and turning movement into something meaningful.

Proud to Be Part of the Austin Running Community

As an Austin founded safety company, being part of this event felt especially important to the Safely team. This is the community that shaped our story and continues to inspire the work we do every day.

From early morning runs to large scale races, the Austin running community consistently shows what it means to look out for one another, and we are grateful to play a small role in that.

Teaching Runner Safety in Moments That Matter

As part of the event, the Safely team led hands on education around how to properly use pepper spray. And of course, Pinky was there too.

Pinky, our life sized pink skeleton, helped participants safely practice their aim and get comfortable using their tools in a controlled environment. Instead of just talking through how pepper spray works, participants were able to step up, spray, and experience it in real time with our Safely Practice Spray (100% water).

We walked through how pepper spray works, how to carry it while running, and when and how to use it. One of the most common things we hear is that people carry a safety tool but have never practiced using it, which is exactly why we continue to show up at events like this.

Why Practicing Matters

Having a personal safety device is important, but knowing how to use it is what builds real confidence. Practicing ahead of time helps remove hesitation and gives you the ability to act quickly if needed.

We always encourage runners to continue practicing beyond events. Using a practice spray with a simple target like our mini Pinky poster can help build muscle memory in a safe and approachable way, because preparation should feel accessible, not intimidating.

Runner Safety Tips to Keep in Mind

For those looking for runner safety tips or ways to feel more confident running alone, here are a few simple habits that can make a difference.

  1. Stay aware of your surroundings and limit distractions while running.
  2. Choose routes that feel comfortable and well lit, especially for early morning or evening runs.
  3. Let someone know your plan before heading out, even if it is just a quick text. Run with others when possible or share your location.
  4. Carry a personal safety tool so you feel prepared if something unexpected happens.

Small steps like these can help you feel more confident every time you head out.

Giving Back to the Community

Supporting this event meant more than just showing up. A portion of Safely’s sales from the event was donated directly to the victims support fund to help those impacted by the tragedy.

If you would like to contribute, you can support the fund here.

We believe safety is not just about prevention. It is also about community, support, and showing up when it matters most.

In addition to being there in person, we also hosted a virtual safety session following the event focused on helping people feel more prepared in high stress situations. You can read more about that session here

Why Partnerships Like This Matter

Events like Buford’s 5K show what is possible when a community comes together with intention. Safely is proud to partner with events and organizations that are creating space for connection, education, and impact.

The more we show up for each other, the stronger and safer our communities become.

Looking Ahead

We will continue partnering with communities, run clubs, and events across the country to provide hands on safety education and support meaningful initiatives. If you are interested in bringing a safety session to your community, we would love to connect (team@livesafely.co).

A Safer Tomorrow Starts Today

Moments like this remind us that safety is about more than what we carry. It is about how we show up for each other, and we are committed to continuing that work.
