3 Things You Need to Secure Your Apartment or Dorm Room

Moving into your first apartment or dorm room can be an exciting yet daunting experience. You’re on your own, but you still want to feel safe and secure. Fortunately, there are some easy and affordable steps you can take to make sure your living space is as secure as possible. Here are three essential items every woman should have in her apartment or dorm room for added peace of mind.

1. A Portable Door Lock - A portable door lock is a great way to add extra security to your home without making any permanent changes. A portable door lock fits over the inside of any doorknob and has a key-lock mechanism that keeps it in place. It’s perfect for traveling because it’s lightweight and easy to pack up, so it’s ideal for those of us who move around often. It also provides an extra layer of security when staying in hotels or Airbnbs.
  • This Portable Door Lock is perfect for your home and for traveling. You can easily take this with you wherever you stay.
2. A Security Camera - ADT reports that homes with a security camera are 300% safer than homes without a security camera. Video doorbells are a great way to keep an eye on who comes to your door without having to open it yourself. With video doorbells, you can see who’s at the door and even talk to them through two-way audio before deciding whether or not you want to let them in. These devices usually come with motion sensors so they can alert you any time someone approaches your door, even if they don’t ring the bell.

We recommend the following cameras:
    • Eufy Security Camera
      • One of our Co-Founders has this camera on her apartment door, and it aided in the identification of a few burglars. You can read the story here. This camera is priced at around $99.
    • Blink Security Camera
      • Blink is a camera brand created by Amazon. You can purchase this camera for around $85.
    • Ring Security Camera
      • Ring is one of the most trusted security cameras brands. This camera is priced at around $99.
3. A Door/Window Alarm - The door/window alarm is an inexpensive device that detects if a window or door is open or closed. It works by emitting an audible alarm if a window/door is opened or tampered with. This can be especially useful if you have large windows that may be difficult for intruders to break into but could still be opened from the outside. The alarm not only alerts you when someone has entered your home but also serves as a deterrent, as potential intruders will know that they have been detected right away.
  • These door/window alarms are great, especially if you live on the first floor and have a porch or window. These alarms are 120dB, meaning your neighbors will be able to hear them if they are activated.

No matter where we live, safety should always be our top priority—especially for women living alone! Taking proactive steps like investing in a portable door lock, video doorbells, and a door/window alarm is a great way to ensure that our homes away from home stay safe and secure at all times. With these three essentials in place, we won’t have to worry about our safety ever again!
