How to Practice & Test Pepper Spray
Pepper spray is one of the most effective non-lethal self-defense tools available. It works by releasing oleoresin capsicum (OC), a natural compound derived from hot peppers that causes intense irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. When deployed, it can temporarily impair an attacker’s vision and breathing, giving you valuable time to create distance and get to safety.
Like any safety tool, confidence and preparation make all the difference. The best way to feel comfortable using pepper spray is by practicing first. That’s why we created the Safely Practice Spray, a training version made with 100% water that lets you practice your aim and get familiar with how the spray works without any irritation.
Practicing helps build muscle memory so that if you ever need to use pepper spray in a real situation, you’ll feel calm, prepared, and ready to take action.
How to Practice Using Pepper Spray Safely
Knowing how to use pepper spray confidently can make all the difference in a stressful situation. Practicing ahead of time helps build muscle memory so you can react quickly if you ever need it.
Here’s how to practice safely and effectively.
Step One: Start With a Practice Spray
Before using real pepper spray, begin with a practice spray to get familiar with the device and how it works.
Set yourself up for success by making sure you:
• Have a disposable target such as cardboard, paper, or a Safely Pinky Poster to aim at
• Triple check that you are using practice spray (100% water) and not your real pepper spray
• Are practicing in a space where you feel comfortable and focused
Using a practice spray allows you to learn the motions without worrying about accidental exposure.
Step Two: Learn the Proper Technique
Once you are set up, follow these steps to practice your technique.
- Stand about 8 to 10 feet away from your target
- Hold the canister with two hands for better control
- Unlock the device by sliding the safety to the right
- Use your thumb to press the trigger. This gives you better control and keeps your fingers away from the nozzle
- Spray in an ear to ear motion across your target to simulate aiming for the attacker’s eyes
- Relock the device and step away just like you would in a real situation
Repeat the process several times until the steps feel natural and automatic.
Step Three: Test Your Real Pepper Spray
Once you feel confident using the motions, it’s a good idea to briefly test your real pepper spray so you understand its spray pressure and pattern.
Before testing your device:
• Carefully read the instructions on the canister
• Choose a well ventilated outdoor area away from people and pets
• Confirm that your spray has not expired
• Never point the spray at yourself or anyone else
Spray a short test burst, then relock the device and store it safely.
Practicing ahead of time helps you stay calm and prepared. If you ever need to use your pepper spray, that confidence and muscle memory can help you react quickly and get to safety.
