How to Use Dog Spray

This video demonstrates how to use Safely pepper spray. While the product shown is not our dog spray, the steps for safe handling, aiming, and deploying the spray are the same.

If you’ve already purchased your Safely Dog Spray, you’re one step closer to feeling confident and prepared. While we hope you never have to use it, it’s important to understand how it works so you’re ready to protect yourself and those around you if needed.

This spray is designed to deter aggressive animals, including dogs, and is made with 0.7% Major Capsaicinoids (MC), a powerful irritant derived from chili peppers. It’s highly effective, but like any tool, knowing how to use it is key.

How to Use Dog Spray

Step 1: Aim your spray with the nozzle facing away from you.

Hold the canister with your thumb on the safety lock and the nozzle pointing outward and away from your face, body, and belongings.

Make sure the spray is properly inserted into the canister so that the nozzle aligns directly above your thumb. This grip gives you better control in high-stress situations.

Step 2: Unlock your dog spray.

Use your thumb to slide the safety lock into the “unlocked” position. This grip offers the most control, power, and aim.

But what matters most is that you’re ready to use it. In a real situation, use whatever finger gives you the fastest and most confident access to deploy your spray safely.

Once unlocked, the nozzle should be pointing in the same direction as your thumb: away from you and toward your target.

Step 3: Spray the animal.

Stand as far back as possible (up to 10 feet away) and aim the spray stream toward the animal’s face.

Move your aim slightly left to right across the eyes and nose area. The goal is to startle and deter the animal, giving you time to escape to safety.

Step 4: Lock & leave.

Once you’ve sprayed, lock the canister again by sliding the safety back into place. Then, leave the area immediately and seek help if needed.

First Aid Information

If you or someone else is accidentally exposed to the spray:

  • Eyes: Rinse with clean water for 15–20 minutes. Remove contact lenses after the first 5 minutes.
  • Skin: Wash with soap and water. Do not use creams, oils, or salves.
  • Inhalation: Move to fresh air. If symptoms persist, seek medical help.
  • Clothing: Remove contaminated clothing and wash separately before reuse.

If irritation continues, consult a physician or call a poison control center.

Storage & Disposal

  • Store below 50°C (122°F) and away from heat, flames, or sunlight.
  • Do not puncture, incinerate, or throw into fire.
  • Dispose of empty or expired canisters in household trash, only after ensuring the can is fully depressurized.

Check your local waste guidelines for aerosol disposal.

Expanding Access to Safety Tools

This dog spray gives you more options in places where traditional pepper spray faces restrictions. It's legal to ship to states like New York and Massachusetts, where access to self-defense tools is limited by outdated laws.

We believe safety should never be out of reach. That’s why we’ve launched a petition to make personal safety tools more accessible while keeping education and responsible use at the core.

Want to test your spray?

Feeling confident starts with practice, and we've got the perfect way to do it safely.

Use our Practice Spray, a water-filled version of our real spray, to safely test your grip, aim, and technique without any active ingredients. It’s a great way to build muscle memory and feel prepared without the mess or stress. Learn more about how to use practice spray here.

If you're testing your actual dog spray, we recommend a brief spray in a well-ventilated outdoor space. Just a quick press, not a full burst. Aim at a safe surface (like cardboard), and always stand upwind.

After testing, clean up safely and dispose of any used target according to local guidelines. Be sure to relock your spray after use.

Disclaimer: Our dog spray is designed specifically as a deterrent against aggressive animals and contains a lower concentration of active ingredients. Always follow the instructions on your product label and consult this page for details specific to your dog spray.
