How to Practice & Test Pepper Spray

Pepper spray is a powerful, non-lethal self-defense tool designed to stop a threat quickly. It works by releasing oleoresin capsicum (OC), which causes intense burning of the eyes, nose, and throat—giving you time to get away safely.

But like any tool, it’s only effective if you know how to use it confidently. That’s why we recommend starting with our Safely Practice Spray—a mess-free option made with 100% water. It allows you to build muscle memory and become confident with your device before using the real thing.

Step One: Practice First

Before testing actual pepper spray, it’s important to familiarize yourself with how it works using a practice version.

Make sure you:

  • Have a disposable target (like cardboard or paper)

  • Have triple-checked that you’re using the practice spray, not your real pepper spray (labeled at the top of the canister)

  • Are in a space where you feel comfortable and focused

Step Two: Learn the Motions

When you're ready, follow these steps:

  1. Stand about 8–10 feet away from your target

  2. Hold the canister with two hands for control

  3. Unlock the device by sliding the safety to the right

  4. Use your thumb to press the trigger — this provides better control and prevents your fingers from slipping or covering the nozzle

  5. Spray in an ear-to-ear motion to increase your chances of hitting the attacker's eyes

  6. Relock the device and step away, just like you would in a real scenario

Repeat this process until each step feels second nature.

Step Three: Test the Real Thing

Once you’re confident, you can test your actual pepper spray. This helps ensure it’s functional and that you're familiar with its pressure and spray pattern.

Before you test:

  • Read the instructions carefully

  • Choose a well-ventilated outdoor area, far from people and pets

  • Confirm the spray hasn’t expired

  • Never aim at yourself or others

Spray a short burst to verify function—then relock and store it safely.

With practice, using your pepper spray becomes instinctive—so if the time ever comes, you’re ready.
