If you have ever wondered about the difference between mace and pepper spray, you are not alone. These two self-defense sprays are often confused, but they are not the same.
In this guide, we will break down how mace and pepper spray differ in formula, strength, legal restrictions, and real-life use. Whether you are building your first safety kit or upgrading your go-to tool, here is what you need to know.
1. Mace Is a Brand Name. Pepper Spray Is an Ingredient.
Let’s clear up the biggest confusion first.
Mace is actually a brand that makes different types of self-defense products. Some mace products use tear gas or other chemical irritants, while pepper spray is made with a natural ingredient called oleoresin capsicum, or OC, which comes from hot peppers.
Not all mace products contain OC. In contrast, high-quality pepper sprays like Safely's are made with OC plus UV dye to help identify attackers.
2. Pepper Spray Is Stronger and More Effective
While both are used for self-defense, pepper spray is generally considered stronger, faster-acting, and longer-lasting than most mace products.
Pepper spray causes intense burning, temporary blindness, and trouble breathing. It works on people under the influence of drugs or alcohol and even aggressive animals.
Mace can cause irritation and coughing, but may not be as reliable in high-risk situations.
3. The Laws Are Not the Same Everywhere
In the United States, pepper spray is legal in most states, but laws vary. Some states restrict the formula, canister size, or where it can be sold.
Mace, depending on the formula used, may also be restricted. Always check your local laws before purchasing.

4. How Easy Are They to Use?
Both products typically come in small canisters. But not all sprays are designed for real-life stress.
At Safely, we design our pepper spray to work when it matters most. That means:
- A twist-top safety to avoid accidental sprays
- A thumb trigger for instinctive control
- A secure grip that fits in your hand or clips to your keychain
- A quick-release design that pops out of its case so you can act fast
5. Price and Value
Most pepper sprays and mace products range from $15 to $50, depending on quality and features. You can find affordable options, but when it comes to your safety, value matters more than price.
Look for sprays that are lab-tested, include UV dye, and are trusted by safety experts.
So Which One Should You Choose?
If you are deciding between mace and pepper spray, we recommend pepper spray for its strength, reliability, and ease of use. It is the most trusted self-defense tool for women, runners, college students, and anyone who wants peace of mind on the go.
And remember — owning spray is just the first step. Knowing how to use it makes all the difference.
Want to Practice Before You Carry?
We offer a Practice Spray that looks and feels just like the real thing, but uses water instead of OC. It's 100 percent legal in all states and perfect for learning what to do under pressure.

MACE is formulated from pepper spray and tear gas. So your information is off. It was only pepper spat for decades, then they added a small amount of CS. It is stronger and more effective than OC alone. Please do better research.
